Beyond the general Express Entry pool, IRCC runs targeted category-based rounds of invitations aimed at specific economic goals — inviting candidates in particular occupations, even if their overall CRS score is lower than what a general round would require. To qualify under most categories, you need at least 12 months of work experience (full-time or the part-time equivalent) within the past 3 years, in a single listed occupation — this doesn't have to be your current job, and for most categories the experience can be from Canada or abroad. The exceptions: the physicians, senior managers, and researchers categories require that experience to be in Canada specifically. (Note: the minimum experience requirement rose from 6 months to 12 months for 2026.)
